The Kenyan minister of Tourism and the nature, Morris Dzoro, has just implemented a training supported by IFAW (the international Fund for the protection of the animals - www.ifaw.org) for the prevention of the crime linked to wild kinds intended for the officers responsible for the application of the law belonging to KWS (Service of forests and fauna of Kenya), in the Kenyan police and in the special team of the agreement of Lusaka (Lusaka Agreement Task Force). This training period of two weeks set up in the school of training of KWS, in Naivasha, intervenes in the wake of catches of smuggled ivory which intervened in at the end of the year last Asia. These catches of ivory could come elephant killed underground in Eastern Africa and in central Africa.
IFAW and wild fauna in Kenya
Mr Dzoro greeted this initiative, underlining that it would help to suppress in this region the traffic of ivory, horns of rhinoceros and other living animals, such as reptiles. He declared that « crime contrary to the wild fauna aggravated by actual dryness, exacerbates the trade of meat of jungle and is responsible for the death of numerous wild animals trophies of which are in poor hands today. »
In his message, Ronald K. Nobleman, General secretary of Interpol, declared that « this training constitutes an investment for the future of KWS, for Africa and for the biological integrity of the planet. » « The crime in relation to environment is a growing problem which is more and more linked to other crimes such as smuggling, fraud, the laundering of silver, the illegal possession of guns and narcotic. One month ago, Cameroonian authorities saved a small chimpanzee and grabbed 50 kg of marihuana during the same affair. The poaching of endangered species became a more and more profitable activity and comparatively easy. We must confront this problem in an international ladder, » he added.
Last September, Philippine authorities grabbed six tonnes of ivory in the airport Ninoy Aquino, in Manila. They think that this booty could come from the Zambia and could have passed in transit by the harbour of Dar Es Salaam in Tanzania. Twenty days later, during two incidents which took place separately in the same airport, authorities grabbed 806 kilograms of ivory on thefts coming from Entebbe, in Uganda, and of Nairobi. James Isiche, regional manager d' IFAW for oriental Africa, asserts it: « The fact that such cargo can cross national borders without being discerned points out that vast networks, very complex, support and maintain the illegal trade of existent wild products of fauna and flora. »
« The crime contrary to wild fauna is a serious worldwide problem - it comes in second position after drug trafficking. His cross-border nature requests a collaboration at the same time between states and between national organisms loaded with the application of law. This also demands the deployment of substantial means which, very often, are not available for developing countries, » he confirmed.
The training in the application of law is supported by IFAW. Last May, IFAW granted Kenya Wildlife Service in the price of the Ecomessage for the quality of the practices in the conflict against crime in environment. The Ecomessage is a system of data collection concerning the incidents, tendencies and the authors of crimes against environment. Data Ecomessage are kept by the general Secretaryship of Interpol, located in Lyons (France). This database is at the disposal of the police of the 179 member states.

This broad foundation of support allows IFAW to make intercede the local communities, the political leaders and the concerned organizations worldwide and to acquire lasting resolutions to answer the challenges of protection and animal conservation - resolutions which will be of benefit at the same time to the animals and to the men.
Over the years, our approach was also various as kinds which we protect. IFAW works in France for more than 20 years, by educating the general public on essential questions concerning wild fauna, by helping the local shelters to consider our companions in four legs, and by treating the double problem of the overpopulation of pets and atrocity. »
